One Watch

My Tissot is my daily driver. I wear it while working, going to a café, and getting on with an ordinary day. Lately, it has become the starting point for an idea: how much could I explore through one watch?

There is the obvious question of why I wear a watch when my phone tells the time. Then there are more interesting ones. What am I paying for? How will I feel about the first scratch? Why do I want another watch when this one already does its job? I’m drawn to watches partly because they can stay with us for a long time. We wear them through days we will forget and a few we will remember. Gradually, an object acquires associations that no specification sheet can describe.

I think about eventually passing a watch to Arjun. What would make it worth keeping? Its condition, its craftsmanship, or the fact that his father wore it? Perhaps some combination of all three.

That is where I want to begin a small podcast about watches, time, and things worth keeping. One Tissot could give me enough to explore for a first season. Wearing it every day gives those questions somewhere to land.

I still look at other watches. A vintage-looking Casio has my attention. A Hamilton sits further down the road. I’m learning to enjoy that interest without turning every attraction into a purchase.

For now, I have a watch on my wrist and a few questions worth spending time with. Love watches. Buy slowly. Keep deeply.
